Paulo Homem De Mello
Paulo graduated in 1996 from Universidade Paulista in Sao Paulo, Brazil with a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. His graduation project, titled “A mixed-use skyscraper complex as the city’s landmark integrated to the expansion of the Art Museum of Sao Paulo”, was selected to compete on the Opera Prima, a national Brazilian competition. Paulo’s first vision was to create and transform the built environment through beauty and functionality. Between 1993 and 2000, he worked for award winning architects including Mauricio Kogan, Luis Fernando Rocco and Sergio Athie’, designing high-end residences, retail stores, corporate office buildings and interiors. Through these experiences, as an architect, he foresaw his abilities to manage and integrate different fields and multi-disciplinary professionals into his work.
Paulo joined Athie’ Wohnrath in 1998, then a 4 years-old firm with 50 employees that provided design&built services for major national and international corporations wherein integration was key. Simultaneously managing design, engineering, and construction in accordance to the clients` specific guidelines, high quality standards, extremely aggressive schedules, precise budget control and strict contract clauses. This molded him into an executive leader who increasingly contributed to the company’s growth, moving fast into strategic management positions and directly responsible for many of the company’s achievements during his tenure of 17 years. Some of the main accomplishments included completion of the headquarters of GENERAL ELETRIC, IBM, BASF, AT&T, NEXTEL, TETRAPACK, SHELL, PETROBRAS, VALE, PINHEIRO NETO, ITAU BBA, UBS, BTG PACTUAL, EXXON MOBIL’s in Latin America, A. SANTO’s in Europe and the largest office complex in Brazil, the MG’s state Administrative City. By 2015, the company had reached 600 employees and was Brazil’s market leader. Paulo gained solid experience and an extensive background in being part of a highly competitive environment.
The most influential Brazilian magazines recognized projects led by Paulo such as “Office Style” in 2006 (Pinheiro Neto) and 2009 (Vale), “Infra” in 2007 (Basf) and 2012 (MG’s state Adm. City), “Casa Vogue” in 2010 (Pine) and “Projecto&Design” in 2008 (UBS Pactual). In addition, recognitions for “FLEX Award of Corporate Architecture” in 2006 (Pinheiro Neto), 2007 (IBM) and 2009 (Gloria hotel) as well as the prestigious award of “AsBEA – Brazilian Association of Engineers and Architects” in 2008 (UBS Pactual).
Paulo has a passion for new challenges while embracing strategic responsibilities and guiding teams to achieve their objectives. His goals are to reach the highest quality, stakeholder satisfaction, financial results and deliver on time, on budget. Paulo is proactive, organized, collaborative and a strategic thinker. He is a team-player who aims to establish partnerships, knows how to delegate but also keeps his finger on the pulse on critical issues.
In 2011, Paulo co-founded a real estate development firm and served as executive director. The firm’s main achievement was a US$ 10M residential building in Florianopolis, Brazil, which by the time it was completed in 2015 was nearly sold out. He thrived in this new experience gaining expertise in marketing, pricing, sales strategy, entitlement, funding, financing and customer relationships. This was a turning point for Paulo.
In 2015, he moved to the United States with his family in order to return to the academic setting for a focused Master Degree in Real Estate and Built Environment at Daniels College of Business, University of Denver. He aims to integrate his management background, experience in international markets and multi-cultural perspective with his immersion into the US market with its diverse and complex society. Paulo is seeking to research business trends, break established mindsets and develop new skills to keep transforming and contributing to the built environment in Colorado. He aspires to develop innovative designs associated with creative and smart engineering solutions, that respect the environment and engage the adjacent communities, therefore, generating wealth and human development for all involved.
Paulo married his beloved Katia in 2003 and their little 5 years-old daughter is named Bruna. He loves to travel, explore and discover new places, enjoys the sun and the outdoors, hiking or snowboarding in the mountains, walking on the beach. He uses photography as a tool to capture the world’s beauty. He appreciates minimalist design and Japanese food because they represent how simple life can be. He rides speed motorcycles to test limits. Paulo lives by his core values, personal ethics and believes that family is the foundation for success.
